Favorite Bazaar Covers by Alexey Brodovitch

Alexey Brodovitch

He gained public recognition for his work in the commercial arts by winning first prize in a poster competition for an artists' soiree called Le Bal Banal on March 24, 1924. The poster was exhibited on walls all over Montparnasse along with a drawing by Picasso, who took second place. Brodovitch remained proud of this poster throughout his career, always keeping a copy of it pinned to his studio wall. The graphic, light-to-dark inversion of its mask shape, type, and background suggest not only the process of photography, but also represents the process of trading one's identity for another when wearing a mask. It is the oldest surviving work by Brodovitch.

Final Collage

This collage serves to organize the chaos of construction. The fence across the bottom grounds the photo arrangements. Each arrangement of pictures explores and describes an area of the construction site over time. The empty space represents the parts of construction that have yet to be finished leaving it open to interpretation if the photos will be filled in later and what the final product will look like.

initial locations and concept statements

My initial locations were the construction outside of Marvin, a storm drain in my neighborhood, and the sign above Urban Outfitters on Massachusetts street.
My concept for the Marvin construction was to show the passage of time through collaged photos of the work in progress. Showing the construction in an organized manner adds rhythm and flow to an
otherwise chaotic scene.
My concept for the storm drain was to show the passage of time and the exploration of space as you passed through the tunnel. Showing one side as small and one as large gives the viewer an idea of the space from inside the tunnel and the space when looking from the outside in on the tunnel. The exploration of space serves to document the journey of the viewer through the tunnel.
My concept for the Urban Outfitters sign was to show the exploration of space through the three viewpoints of the left side, right side, and frontal view of the sign and to show the passage of time through photos taken at different points in the day from morning to night.
I chose only three locations because I felt really passionate about these particular locations and wanted to explore them in both grid and collaged format.

Inspiration

These are some of the preliminary photos I looked at when deciding the locations of my project. I really liked the visual leap created in the top photo and the distortion of the proportions in the bottom two.
